Animated projects are always such a blast. This was for a very stylized music video where the artist (Ernest K.) was in a 80’s style video game chasing after a girl. The production team wanted to have a good idea of what sort of style to emulate and so we opted for some color storyboards. Ernest’s album South of the Border is country but with a beachy tropical feel. We really played this up in the boards and storyline.

Matching shots to boards is not always the goal though, many times it’s much more about conveying the same mood and idea as the boards. However on big budget shoots with A list talent time on set is money, and so really refined storyboards are great assets to save time on set.

Not only did Justin Clough (the brilliant director) turn the story into a music video he cut a short film together that really does the whole story justice. Drawing time period specific boards was an absolute dream. I love the 1940’s and did need much prompting to hop on this project.

The boards ended up guiding the feel of the scenes more than the exact shots. But you can see most of the narrative components in the boards made it into the film in some way or another.

The music video was directed by Justin Clough, who matched the emotional tone of the music with a deeply moving story of an Iraq vet dealing with PTSD.
